Pneumococcal disease is an infection caused by Streptococcus pneumoniae bacterium and is spread by air borne droplets of saliva or mucous when someone coughs or sneezes.
Invasive pneumococcal disease is high risk and can cause pneumonia, meningitis and other widespread diseases in the body.
Those most at risk groups are offered free vaccination from the Australian Government and include:
– All infants up to 5 years of age
– Adults 65 and above
– Indigenous Australians 15 years and over
We are currently running a pneumococcal vaccination health promotion for those adults 65 years and over who have never had a pneumococcal vaccination or are overdue. Our nurses are identifying patients within this health care gap and QMSC as a whole is driving health promotion both in the clinic and on our online platforms, encouraging those eligible to receive the vaccination.
Over the past months, we have seen a group of patients who were unvaccinated and at risk receive their pneumococcal vaccination. This is super exciting for us at QMSC.
Check back for another update next month!
